Credit cards, schmedit cards. We know what they are. We know what they do. And we’ve all seen the classic, run-of-the-mill credit card promos full of legalese. So how could Venmo stand out from the crowd?
By not sounding like an old school bank, that’s how. Venmo was built for friends. 65 million and counting. So I developed copy that felt friendly, not bank-y for the launch of the Venmo Credit Card.
My mission? Help Venmo uphold its dominance in the market, increase accounts and brand loyalty, and generate new streams of revenue — all while developing and implementing a revamped, lively, human brand voice.
Not your mama's bank: The friendliest FinTech
To craft the perfect message, you need to know your audience. I started by getting acquainted with Venmo’s users. Who they are, what they do, and what they care about. I drilled down on the credit card’s top value propositions and how they benefit cardholders. Then I set to work weaving an irresistible story to bring these elements to life.
Armed with user insights, I developed strategic messaging for Venmo’s lifecycle marketing campaigns — acquisition, activation, and early month on book (EMOB). Even better, I customized the language for differentiated, targeted user groups, such as pre-approved or power users, and more.
First things first: User research
The company wanted to remind new cardholders that shopping is super fun and extra special with Venmo. So I wrote fresh, celebratory followup emails with language like “welcome to the good life.” I drove revenue by encouraging users to use the virtual card feature to shop right away and activate their physical credit card once it arrived.
